After a 2 month hiatus Books on the Radio is back!
Brian and some friends recorded many of the stories from this book in dramatic and hilarious form.
In this episode we make it thru 3 stories and a song by the Fiery Furnaces.
All in anticipation of the Joyland Vancouver Summit that happens on Sunday April 11th at 7pm at the W2 Culture and Media House.
It’s gonna be a throw down.
See you on the 11th!
(Posted after the break is my written preamble to this episode with attendant linkage.)
Welcome back to Books on the Radio.
I’m happy to be back after a brief hiatus in the early part of 2010. As many of you know I broadcast from the city of Vancouver and during February we had a little party in this city called the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. It was a huge spectacle and the biggest 2 week party that I have ever been a part of.
During the Olympics Books on the Radio partners with my friend Trevor Battye and the amazing people at the W2 Culture and Media House to host something called the W2 Real Vancouver Writers’ Series. The Series featured 45 of Vancouver’s best writers from internationally recognized superstars like Steven Galloway & Timothy Taylor to local talents like Kevin Chong, Lee Henderson, Heather Haley, Nikki Reimer, Richard Van Camp, Chris Walter and Leilah Nadir to up and coming writers like McKinley Hellenes, Alex Leslie and Weldon Hunter among many others. It was an incredible experience and much of the footage of the events has been captured on video that is or at least will be available on the BOTR site ASAP.
So that kept us busy for a while. Then I went to Toronto and rocked a bit with some of the best writers, thinkers and ne’er do wells in that city. Big props to Julie Wilson of Book Madam and Associates, Amy Logan Holmes at Open Book Toronto, Nic Boshart of Invisible Publishing and my arch nemesis Dan Wagstaff, who has some great T shirt ideas.
I also happened to meet Emily Schulz and Brian Joseph Davis – both amazing writers and co-creators of the joyland website. If you’re not familiar with Joyland, I recommend that you get yourself to joyland.ca immediately. It’s the best place for new writing on the web and an excellent community of creative people.
The next couple of Books on the Radio shows are going to be supporting something called the Joyland Vancouver Summit which will be happening at the W2 Culture and Media House on Sunday April 11 at 7pm.
The event will be hosted by mild mannered Kevin Chong and features Emily Schultz, Claire Gibson, Dan Schwartz, Shay Wilson, Rob Peters and the focus of today’s show, Brian Joseph Davis, whose new book Ronald Reagan, My Father is a beautifully designed collection of crazy stories from the authior of I Tania and the Portable Altamont.
The recordings that we will hear today are from the new book and are performed by actors from Toronto and New York’s Improv and Comedy scenes.
If you dig what you hear then I’ll see you at the W2 Culture and Media House at 7pm on Sunday April 11th. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, we’ll be streaming it live and video recording it for posterity.
